Trading/Selling Policies

1. People who love books love Hooked On Books. We have a large inventory of books in many categories. The prices will generally please the buyer. When a customer wishes to trade their own books for store credit, we follow these standard guidelines: The bottom line is supply & demand.

A. Among our inventory are books consigned to us by licensed book dealers. Trade credit may not be used for these books. They are designated by a D-JC or D-HB code printed in pencil on the book's first white page.

B. We commit to keeping current bestsellers, book group titles, and required school reading materials in stock. To do so, we order new books from the largest book distributor in the country. Trade credit may not be used for new books, which are designated with a N on the price tag. Most of our new books are discounted 10 to 20% off the original retail price, but there are, of course, exceptions. PLEASE NOTE: Trade credit may not be used for books pulled from inventory to be placed on "hold".

C. We also place weekly orders for NEW, in print books, and offer a 20% discount for cash purchases, and 15% discount for credit/debit card purchases (to offset the costs of processing credit cards). Not all books are discounted. Some special order books may require pre-payment.

2. When you would like to trade for books: Hooked On Books accepts books only on a need basis: Due to the current size of our inventory, we accept only books that appear to be very saleable. Criteria: CONDITION, Popularity, Subject Matter. We DO NOT accept textbooks, Reader's Digest condensed books, Book Club editions, encyclopedias, water damaged, soiled books, books with torn covers, underlining or highlighting. In general, we do not accept newer hardcover fiction once the title is available in a paperback edition. Please limit your trades to two bags or one small box per day.

PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY INCOMING BOOKS ON MONDAYS, OR AFTER 5:30PM ANY DAY.

3. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule: Sometimes we do not accept very current good condition paperback fiction, simply because we have too many copies. One week later, we may accept the same book. We do not promise to accept books back into our inventory that were previously purchased from us.

4. Trade credit may not be used for books marked CASH. (However, checks or cards are acceptable as payment for any book.) "NT" stands for NO TRADES. These are generally new, high demand books. ROMANCE BOOKS MAY ONLY BE TRADED FOR OTHER ROMANCE BOOKS.

5. When you would like to sell your books: Hooked On Books purchases books only on a need basis: Desirability, demand and uniqueness are the criteria. In general, books for sale must be in like-new condition. Payment ranges from 20% of the cover price to as little as 10%. There are instances, however, in which we pay more than 20% depending upon the book's escalated value. We DO NOT pay cash for ROMANCE titles.

6. Due to an increase of books being left for extended periods of time, we may deduct a storage fee for books left longer than two days. Any books which we do not need must be picked up within a week, or they will be donated to a local charity. If you have books you would like to donate, we suggest the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District bookstores, the local correctional facilities or thrift stores. Due to space and time constraints, we no longer accept large quantities of books as donations.

7. When you rent our audio books: We maintain a very large selection. If you prefer to rent audio books, this is an affordable option ideal for the commuter, jogger, traveler and vision impaired. The cost is $1 per cassette or CD in the individual collection for 2 week rental. Audio books are also for sale, ask us for further details.

We welcome questions and comments. Thank you!
